For its fifth participation to Only Watch, Bell & Ross has offered an exclusive model and a unique experience to motorsports aficionados and daredevils. The BR-X1 RS17 Only Watch features a skeleton mechanism and an innovative case made of carbon, ceramic and rubber.
No matter how great, gratifying, or first a new watches are, a genuinely “iconic” version is something most watch brands will never be able to convincingly assert — from its very nature the expression can be correctly appropriate to only a restricted variety of watches. I attempt to avoid even using the term, but I believe many watch fans will agree that Bell & Ross’ square-cased, aviation-themed watches based on the dashboard instruments of old planes will be eligible. The design is strongly associated with and suspended in air, but Bell & Ross has branched out into plenty of other genres or styles with the square case as the base. While the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver might get lost among so many different variations on the theme, taken alone it’s successful as a compelling dive watch. There are many Bell & Ross collections which use essentially the same basic case design but also in various sizes (and each with various models). The BR 01 is a wrist-eclipsing (for me, anyhow) 47mm, the BR 03 like the one reviewed here’s 42mm, and the BR S is 39mm. There are divers in other groups — and there have been more in the past, like the BR 02 — but, again, the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver is the first diver in the square case.
By acquiring the Bell & Ross watch the happy donor received two tickets for a behind-the-scenes experience with the Renault Sport Formula One™ Team at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He will also have the opportunity to meet the drivers and will receive the gloves that Nico Hülkenberg’s wore during the race.
