A Re-Edition of the Rarest Panerai – Mare Nostrum PAM00300

What do you know about the Mare Nostrum? It should date back to the 1943. In 1943, Officine Panerai, the well-known watchmaker provided the Mare Nostrum to the Italian Navy as a standard stuff for the officers. However, due to some historical events, the development of the Mare Nostrum model was restricted. Only very few samples were made and left.

So the Mare Nostrum may be the most precious and rarest models made by Panerai. But we are so lucky. In 2010, this watch was re-issue. Discovery by Officine Panerai of among the prototypes, now this watch is a member of the collections in the Officine Panerai Museum in Florence, enabled development of a new Mare Nostrum, a remarkable model from the collectors’ perspective, in one edition of just 99 good examples that reproduce the initial right lower towards the littlest detail.

The Mare Nostrum Watch, comes with an impressive brushed case in three parts and calculating 52 mm across, such as the original. With quite strong lugs, it features a tonneau shape, but looks round because of the wide flat bezel with ridged advantage on which, just like around the prototype, an excellent circular mark sticks out, possibly because of an incomplete process or perhaps a reference mark for any subsequent scale engraving. The screw-lower back plate has four grooves to help unscrewing which too is within brushed steel, but unlike the initial, it provides a sapphire crystal window by which the movement is visible. The round winding and controlling crown, using the words Mare Nostrum engraved on its ridged edge is from the screw-lower type and also the pump buttons are round. The timepiece is guaranteed water tight to 3 bar (about 30 metres), a depth that relied around the historic utilisation of the Mare Nostrum.

Guarded by a 1.6 mm thick anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the dial includes a black base and 2 levels. The outer, upper ring, bears small Arabic numbers, stick hour markers and round minute markers, all covered in luminescent material. The central one level, on the millimetre lower, bears what they are called from the brand and model and also the two subsidiary dials. Around the left the little seconds one, around the right the minute counter, set to 45, as was standard in individuals days.

This re-creation from the Mare Nostrum uses, such as the original, a hand-wound mechanism: OP XXV calibre, drawing from the Minerva calibre that measures 16 and 3/4 lignes. The total amount makes 18,000 alternation an hour or so, identical to the Angelus movement from the prototype. Fitted having a anti-shock device, the column-wheel movement may be easily seen with the window around the back plate and all sorts of levers are polished with rounded corners.

This Panerai Mare Nostrum PAM00300 has got the same strap colour and material because the original: military green in leather-lined fabric. The buckle however differs, bigger and trapezoidal fit.

This re-edition is absolutely faithful towards the primary qualities of the impressive chronograph: case, dimensions, dial and production processes. It makes sense a sizable watch with large historic appeal and large visual impact.
